Our History: A Legacy of Community Since 1885

The story of the Paignton Constitutional Club is intertwined with the very growth of Paignton as a Victorian resort following the arrival of the railway in 1859.

For nearly 150 years, we have served as a steadfast social hub, evolving from a traditional gentlemen’s political club into the inclusive, award-winning community space it is today.

The Early Years & Palace Avenue

Our club is resident in a building that is so much bigger on the inside than it appears from the street.

  • Victorian Origins: Originally established as a Conservative Club, the premises were designed to provide a high-standard environment for local professionals and residents to discuss the affairs of the day.
  • A Historic Setting: We are located in the historic heart of the town, just a stone's throw from the medieval Coverdale Tower and the old Bishop's Palace. This connection to the past is reflected in the names of our main rooms, the Coverdale Bar and the Palace Lounge.
  • Continuous Presence: We have been a private members' club in these specific premises since 1885, making us one of the oldest continuously operating social institutions in South Devon.

Evolution of a Social Hub

As the decades passed, the club transitioned from its formal political roots into a broader social mission. Throughout the 20th century, the club survived two World Wars and the changing face of the British high street, always remaining a sanctuary for its members.

Today, we are proud to be a member of the Association of Conservative Clubs (ACC), but our focus is firmly on friendship and leisure.

A Modern Chapter: Award-Winning Hospitality

History isn’t just about the past; it’s about maintaining standards for the future. In recent years, the Paignton Constitutional Club has gained regional acclaim for its commitment to quality:

  • CAMRA Recognition: We are honored to have been named the South Devon CAMRA Club of the Year for 2024 and 2025.
  • Good Beer Guide: Our dedication to cellar-keeping has earned us a place in the 2026 Good Beer Guide, proving that while we respect our origins, we serve the modern tastes of today.

Looking Forward

From our founding to the vibrant, live-music venue we are today, the Paignton Constitutional Club remains a testament to the power of community. We invite you to become a part of our ongoing story.
